For export and support managers
Technical support across time zones: how much of your day do export markets get?
Worked out hour by hour: how much of a UK technical desk’s day overlaps with the UAE, Singapore, New York and Sydney, in winter and in summer.

UK manufacturers export. Their distributors and installers work in the Gulf, South East Asia, North America and Australia. Their technical desk works in the UK. The overlap between the two working days is easy to work out, and the answer is usually smaller than people assume.
In short
- A UK desk working 08:00 to 17:00 overlaps with a working day in the UAE for 5 hours in winter, with Singapore for 1 hour, New York for 4 hours and Sydney for none.
- Every question outside the overlap waits for the UK to open, which for Singapore is the end of the working day and for Sydney is after it has finished.
- Documented questions answered from a guide do not have to wait for the UK to open.
Four working days on one clock
The figure draws a working day of 08:00 to 17:00 local time in each of four export markets on a UK clock. The shaded band is the UK desk. Switch between UK winter and UK summer to see each day move.

The UAE shares the whole UK morning and the start of the afternoon. Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain are an hour closer to the UK, so each shares an hour more: 6 hours in winter and 7 in summer. New York shares the UK afternoon. Singapore gets an hour or two at the very end of its day. Sydney gets nothing in either season: by the time the UK desk opens, Sydney has gone home.
Why winter and summer differ
The UK puts its clocks forward on the last Sunday in March and back on the last Sunday in October. The Gulf states and Singapore never change theirs, so each gains an hour of overlap in the UK summer. New York changes on different dates from the UK, and Sydney changes in the opposite direction.

What the gap costs the installer
A question asked at nine in the morning in Singapore reaches a UK desk that opens at four in their afternoon in UK winter, and at three in UK summer. If the answer needs one follow-up, the job is into the next day.
For Australia, every question is a next-day answer, whenever it is asked.
Distributors in those markets often cope by building their own technical teams, who in turn ring the UK when they are stuck. That works, at a price, and it puts a layer between the manufacturer and the installer that the manufacturer cannot see into.
What answering at any hour changes
- Documented questions stop waiting. A limit setting or a fault code gets the approved answer at 09:00 in Singapore, not at 16:00.
- The rest arrives ready. What does need the UK team is waiting when the desk opens, with the product, the fault and the checks already made.
- You see the market. Every question from every country is counted, so you know what export installers ask without relying on the distributor to tell you.

Questions people ask
How many hours does a UK technical helpline overlap with Singapore?
If both work 08:00 to 17:00 local time, one hour in UK winter (Singapore is 8 hours ahead) and two hours in UK summer (7 hours ahead). A question asked at 9 a.m. in Singapore reaches a UK desk that opens at 4 p.m. Singapore time in UK winter and 3 p.m. in UK summer.
Does the Gulf change its clocks?
No. The UAE stays on Gulf Standard Time, UTC+4, all year. It is 4 hours ahead of the UK in winter and 3 in summer, so the overlap with a UK working day is 5 hours in winter and 6 in summer. Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain stay on UTC+3 all year, an hour closer to the UK, so they share 6 hours in winter and 7 in summer.
How can a UK manufacturer support installers in other time zones?
By answering documented questions from a guide at any hour, so the installer in another time zone is not waiting for the UK to wake up, and holding anything that needs a person for the UK team with the conversation attached.
